Lesser known companies/luthiers

Great suggestions all. I'm working my way through checking out each and every suggestion I haven't heard of before, and there are definitely some fantastic builders out there. Highly recommend.

That's pretty much the big difficulty in answering this sort of question in an internet forum that is by definition a bubble of enthusiasts: The names we TB'ers think of as commonplace are probably completely under the radar in the Real World; the names we TB'ers think of as under the radar are simply invisible almost anywhere else.

But for the hell of it, some invisible names:
- Tom Clement
- ACG (Alan Cringean)
- Linc Luthier
- A Basses (Albey Balgochian)
- Michael Dolan
- Hugh Manson
I'm surprised it took until post #80 before Tom Clement got a mention. This is my Ergo:-

Esh Basses, based in Berlin, have a good reputation..."

Esh basses have been manufacture in Czech Republic for many years now, since 2015 or '16 if I recall correctly. As far as the brand being obscure, they did it to themselves. They latest owners cheapened the brand by using le$$er-quality components and re-marketing old catalog basses that are continuations or copies of the previous German ones.
Their low-budget perpetually-incomplete website shows the owners' investment in marketing: it's simply re-hashed ad copy from the previous German owners and uses the same models & pictures of them that were on the previous websites for a long time too. In reality, the only basses the "current" Esh company had at one point a few years ago were NAMM showoff pieces, but no other inventory. They'd make a cheaper bass for a customer if necessary, but only using the stock templates et cetera, no custom work for the money.

The only way to find a genuine original high-quality German Esh bass is on the used market.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that, and, admittedly, I hadn't really kept up with them for quite a while. Your mention of the perpetually-incomplete website definitely rings true, which is why I don't doubt the rest of your assessment. It's a shame to see.
