Lessons: A good idea?

Would you build a better car with the help of an experienced car designer/engineer?

Would you build a better house with the help of an experienced builder?

Would you become a better mathematician with the help of a maths teacher/lecturer?

They are similar questions, I'm surprised many people don't see the connection between music and other professions. Sure, you may be able to learn some things on your own and make your own discoveries, but you'll make many more if you have the help of someone who's already learned a lot about music and has some experience teaching it.

Exactly.

Try sky diving without lessons first. Then make your decision.

This shouldn't even be a question. Lessons with a quality instructor are ALWAYS a good idea.

Agreed!

I've been playing for over a quarter century. I started "formally" in school orchestra, piano lessons and when I first started electric bass, I took lessons (from fellow TB'er, KJung, oh so many years ago).

A couple of years ago I decided I needed to get into it with a teach again so I started taking lessons from a killer player in town (David Karns) and saw a HUGE improvement in my playing almost immediately!

Nothing gets you rolling in the right direction better than a good teacher!

I've been a musician for 30 years and a bassist for 20 of those. Every 3-5 years or whenever I run across an interesting player or teacher I buy myself a month or 2 of lessons. It still refreshes my playing and my outlook.
It is a no-brainer, take some lessons you will never regret it.
