Need to try and replicate the opening pattern and close and cheaply as possible. Short of a Korg Mini Vocoder are there any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

You mean you want to replicate the sound of that bass line, right? (I'm presuming you already can play the note pattern on your instrument, right? Otherwise that would be a greater concern than the tone/timbre of your instrument.)
Once the notes are sorted though I think listeners would be fine accepting a bass timbre that has some vocal-like inflections and vowel-like formants; it doesn't need to be an exact duplicate of the original recording tone-wise to convey the gist. Any number of synth pedals, or envelope-controlled filters, or high-Q wah wah pedals (with some phase shifting thrown on top for good measure) will get you in the ballpark, at least to the point where the crowd is more likely to get up and dance rather than nitpick the minutiae of your bass tone.
