I'm reminded that when gas prices were really high, there was an article in the paper about indie rock bands being forced off the road by transportation costs. Now, the lightweight stuff was still more expensive at that point, but I'm not sure that's the case any more. Even if my band was on a vanity tour and operating at a loss, I'd rather put the money into a decent hotel room, than pour it into the tank of an Econoline with full size cargo trailer.Absolutely, and better milage, and lower insurance, and lower weight fees, etc.
For my use, the lightweight "fad" turned into a sort of vicious circle. Once I knew that I could downsize my gear, then I could also downsize my car, and even my house, if I wanted to. Last night I crammed my upright bass, amp, two music stands, guitar, guitar amp, and guitarist, into my Scion XA. He doesn't own a car, so we carpool to rehearsals and gigs.
