...To the OP, while it's true that much of the sound is in the fingers, IMO, it matters very much what's under those fingers. If it didn't, we'd all be playing inexpensive ply basses. A good bass can't really compensate for poor technique and, yes, that must be developed first...
+1. I think the best way it was ever described to me is that you can get a great tone out of a lesser quality bass, but a better quality bass makes it easier to get that great tone, as well as a variety of other great tones.
