lifeless bass recording from home

Another thing that helps direct recording of bass is to add a mono reverb. A fat reverb with a short tail can really add life to the direct recording. The idea to keep the bass guitar and kick drum dry is fine when recording through a microphone as some room ambience still leaks through, but when an instrument goes direct it doesn't get that ambience and we need to add a little as our ears tend to want to place the sound in a space.

I haven’t used any focusrite preamps or interfaces, so I can’t comment on their quality. But I will say that when I got my current interface (RME Babyface Pro FS), I was shocked at how good my bass sounded plugged directly in. These are not “character” preamps, just high quality and uncolored. A big difference from the Mackie Onyx preamp I used previously.

I like the sound of my basses plugged straight into a foucsrite. If you can find something like a used Qstrip it will really beef up and fill out your tone. The sweepable mids and high and low pass filters in the same box go a long way to give you good flexibility with your tone, without overshadowing the sound of your bass. Save up and add a compressor and something like 1020s transformer to your chain when you have the cash and you’ll have a pretty nice headphone/ DI go anywhere and know your sound rig.

I find that this Rupert Neve really wakes up the the signal in a very transparent way. It just seams to takeaway the lifelessness that I get going direct into my Focusrite or with other DI's
