Don does build fantastic boxes, and does some of the best custom tolex I have seen. I dont think he likes to work in lightweight ply like 1/2" Okoume or Itallian Poplar. There is a huge amount of weight savings to be had in different construction materials.

He does. Sometimes, poplar is hard to get, but I believe he is having an easier time of it now that he is on the West Coast.

I am relatively new to the high quality bass gear. I had Peavey,and Crate etc,,when I was a teen ager. Now that I am much older,I want to play again. I went to an open mic,,mid size bar. Guy was playing a Lakland 5 String with a GK RB head and a BagEnd single 15". It was a light cab,and no matter where I went in that room,I heard him. The cab weighed less than 50lbs. Is there any other high quality cabs that weight in that area? And the cab handled that low B.

If you have the money, the new Baer ML112 will give you a similar experience in an even smaller box with less weight, and no need for a custom build. B string performance is MUCH better than the small Bag End cube.

I love my Bag End S-15. 49 lbs., 200 watts, super portable.
Built like a tank. Loud, handles an active low B very well.
Just buy a Bag End.

After using several cabs, and configurations, I've come to Bag End - weight not withstanding. I really do love these little boxes and they sound phenomenal. Though with that said I am no longer playing a 5 string and do not have to contend with an amp/cab replicating a low B - I do venture into low D territory with my Hipshot and the Bag End handles it with aplomb.

Epifani UL2-115 If you can find any of the OLD ones, they are around 35 pounds with TONS of low end.

I just saw the OP mentioning the less-than-50 lb. Bag End he liked.

Know Baer is top-notch goods. And yes, you're 100% right about the build time (maybe 8 weeks? maybe a little less?). But personally, for my money (in this instance, literally, lol), I believe LDS can deliver for a savings in comparison. Good things come to those who wait.

And if the OP wanted to consider a 112, I think a 4 ohm Faital Pro 12PR300 would be a strong contender.

I bought a GK MB 115 a year ago,on sale @ Mus. Friend for $315. It's nice and light and puts out some decent sound.Has a real nice EQ and a Horn which is important (IMO) especially for slappin and poppin purposes. And I direct line out for the PA. ANyways...Pretty nice for not a whole bunch of $$$. And again....LIGHT Weight for sure.

+1 all the way. My experience witht he LDS 3015'HO' cabs is VERY positive. And, Don is in love with those Faital loaded boxes also.
