Light speaker cabinets;problems

I have recently purchased two different lighter weight speaker enclosures and I am having rattling and vibration issues with both (a Dr Bass and a Genz Benz). Anyone else around here have this problem?

Is it the cabinets themselves vibrating like they aren't braced enough? Or are they just prone to vibrating from the woofer inertia, high volume, loose floors, etc.

Those 2 brands aren't really known for making lowgrade cheap stuff. Genz usually means quality. Dr. Bass is a butthole but he did make sturdy boxes.

With the Dr Bass it seems like a bracing issue. It only vibrates when I play at moderate to higher volumes and I can tell the speaker itself sounds fine.

Are you sure you are not hearing room rattles? Move the rig outside and try the same volume levels. It is very hard to tell room rattles from cab rattles inside a room.

I played a small gig with a Eden EX112 cabinet powered by a Carvin BX500 head running at 300 watts. The place where we gigged had hardwood floors. I heard a lot of rattle on the cab for about half of the first set. I borrowed a piece of rubber mat the drummer had and placed that under the EX112. Problem solved. No more rattle, just good solid bass.

Most likely the room. It is very hard to 'visually locate' the source of the sound of vibration/rattle. A room can really fool your ears!

Yeah, pop these cabs on a concrete patio and play them with some volume to see if it's the cabs that are vibrating. More likely it's joists or rafters in your house that are rattling. It would be unusual for both [new] cabs to be rattling. If they are, there may be a chance that a speaker wire is resting against a cone, which would produce sonic vibrations.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried the Dr Bass in a number of different rooms and settings and the rattle is there so I believe that it is in the enclosure. I believe I found the source of the rattle in the Genz Benz; the speaker is not secured with the proper screws to the face of the cabinet; I will get new screws and properly secure it and let everyone know if it worked.

That's a big oops - bet they'd send you the correct screws for free if ya call em.

Try tightening the screws that hold the speakers in the enclosure and the ones that hold the grill on the cab.
