Light touch vs. Compression

I don’t consider compression a crutch. It’s like salt in food. A little can enhance it. Too much will ruin it.

Sure, one can cook a flavorful dish without salt, but why leave it out just to prove a point?

Tell that to James Jameson or Timmy C - or Flea for that matter. If you play hard for your tone/feel, you can lower the pickups or raise the action

The problem is playing too hard and in that cases they solved that way.
Playing softer is safer...
You just read my comment bad. Playing hard is not bad, its more problematic...

I use both light touch and compression. I can get the consistency I want with the blend knob of the Studio Bass on 50% so it sounds like a recorded part.

When mine gets here, I'll probably hit you up for some tips. I know nothing of compression, lol. But sounding like a recorded part is my goal.

I got my Seymour Duncan Studio Bass installed in my chain. And you're right. My bass sounds like a recorded part. I didn't know I could sound like that, lol. Super transparent, noise free, easy to setup and sounds awesome.

I've seen those compressors with like 8 or 10 knobs. I'd never want to mess with that. If anyone asked me which compressor to get, I'd just say, forget the rest, get a Duncan.

Compression is an effect and should be used as such. Anytime it's being used to compensate for bad technique, it sounds cheesy.

It seems that if you do it correctly, it doesn't have a "sound" at all. It just sounds right.
