Lighter-weight tuners for Fender Kingman v2?

I have a "thing" for short scale acoustic basses - not for gigging, just for around the house - and I bought a Fender Kingman v2 last summer. I like the neck very much (pretty much like a Mustang), but I hate the neck dive. I can compensate somewhat with clever strapping, but I REALLY want to replace the tuning machines. Has anyone done that successfully in one of these basses?

I took the Kingman and some Gotoh Res-o-lite GB640 tuners to a luthier, who said they would not fit, so I returned them. So I'm looking for more ideas. Thank you.
