Lighting for show?

Hey, thought some of you guys might have some experience with this stuff.

My band plays some experimental, psychadelic stuff (think King Crimson, Mars Volta, Tool, Pink Floyd).

We really want some sort of light show to go along with the music. I'm not talking like a spotlight. We're thinking we want some trippy, swirly, crazy stuff.

So have any of you guys gotten into lighting equipment? Do you have any recomendations or tips on what to avoid/what is a good bang for the buck. etc?

Our idea so far is to buy a used projector and hook it up to a computer, but maybe you guys have a better idea.

Thanks

When the film gets stuck and melts in old movie projectors, its very psychedelic...:smug:

Your local Guitar center should have all kinds of tripped out, psychedelic lighting.

When I'm in the "mood"...;) I just go for the (ever-hallucinogenic), all-blue stage lighting look.

(Bang for the buck?)
These large blue bulbs and clamp-on fixtures are quite cheap at home centers and hardware stores.
