Likes on Posts versus Likes on Members

I like (sorry) that I can add a like to a post. Much better than adding a whole new message to say '+1'.

Displaying accumulated likes against members ? I don't really see a positive and I can easily see the negatives. Popularity contests could easily follow ... we don't really want that do we ?

Personally, I wish everyone had to used their real name too, that way everyone would be accountable for what they post - but...

I couldn't agree more. My personal policy is to never post anything that I wouldn't say to someone in person, and I wish everyone else did the same. Using real names would certainly encourage that -- but of course it'll never happen....

Cool, thanks!

The "Reply" button will quote that specific, individual message by placing it within quote tags in the quick reply message box at the bottom of each message thread screen.

The "+Quote" button is for quoting multiple messages. Each time you click it, it will place that message's text in memory. When you are ready to enter a reply, go to the quick reply message box and you'll see the "Insert Quotes..." button at the bottom left. Click that button and a pop up will appear:

View attachment 417876

This box will contain all of the messages you quoted. You can drag messages up or down to rearrange the quoting order and you can click the "Remove" text to remove any message.
When you're ready, click "Quote These Messages" and they will be entered into the quick reply message box for you to begin adding your own text.
The "Cancel" button will abort the procedure.

Hope that helps...

I'm really looking forward to the new TB software updates coming tonight (5/12/14) at 9pm (updates should take about 30 minutes) - expressly the darker skins. We'll also be able to swap the Likes with Location under Avatars and etc.

EDIT: Correction - the darker skins won't be available until sometime next week (hopefully).

EDIT, EDIT: Tonight's new TB software updates are nice. Thank you

Is there a summary/list somewhere of the updates that were implemented last night? I remember seeing a pop-up message yesterday summarizing some of the anticipated changes, but now I can't remember what they were....

I see that your location is under your name and not your "likes". Another cool thing would be to put up the amount of people that follow you. That could be a good way of showing either who gives the best knowledge, or on the other hand who gives the funniest answers. Either way wouldn't be a bad thing to see without checking someones profile.

Well, actually neither really prove anything - and you're late to the party because TB admin just hid them last night to avoid popularly contest abuse. Cheers

You're right - neither the number of follows or the number of likes really mean anything ... they can both be 'gamed' (literally). Likes is hidden from the message 'mini profiles' in two of the three available templates, but they're also here . And so long as members can be ranked by number of likes somewhere, then the because of the gaming/fun aspect, they can't really be used to make meaningful inferences about members, such as 'reliable', 'useful', 'authoritative'.

Not being a stick in the mud, really. But to sum up my point of view: Showing accumulated likes on a post -> Good thing. Showing accumulated likes against a member -> No use to me whatsoever, for reasons stated above. That's fine (seeing as a lot of people like it), I'll just ignore that bit.

I'm not worried about popularity contests. But then, I'm not 13, physically or mentally.

If personal "likes" have a switch, as far as I'm concerned TB admins are welcome to turn it on and off as they see fit. I won't be checking either way.

As far as "likes" for posts, I think there is some value there, even if it just reduces the number of +1 posts.
