Likes on Posts versus Likes on Members

I like (sorry) that I can add a like to a post. Much better than adding a whole new message to say '+1'.

Displaying accumulated likes against members ? I don't really see a positive and I can easily see the negatives. Popularity contests could easily follow ... we don't really want that do we ?

Agree. I remember well another forum that had something called "Rep Points" that were displayed by each member's username. Users would go to that forum's version of OT and start "Rep Point threads"' where they gave each other points in mega threads. I also remember well that it was at exactly this point that this forum jumped the shark for me and I stopped going there. The option to like posts is probably a good thing. The lame-o get-a-life collection of popularity points is not, IMO.

Yep, I think the "Like" thread originally started just as a funny fun thing, at least it was for me (I posted too) as I learned to navigate my way around the new TB software changes and etc. But if TB admin honestly thinks people having fun or liking people, things, or post is a problem, then they probably should close the thread and disable the "Like" function all together.

There sure is a tremendous amount of misguided concern and accusation going on here that I take offense to. I started the like thread not as a way to achieve some brownie points (that I can't find anyway), make fun of the system of "likes" or any other paranoid theory of alleged ulterior motive...I started it to adapt to a new system in a purely lighthearted and fun way with no ill intention at heart.

The absolute LAST thing on my mind was being part of some "clique" or conspiracy to push those without "likes" into the shadows of TB obscurity...but that's how it appears to have been misconstrued by some.

I would just like it to be on record that if the Admins decide to do away with or modify the "like" feature, it isn't because of an innocent thread so much as it is about others perceptions about its alleged intentions and ramifications.

If there is an incentive to having "likes" in TB that puts one member over some type of advantage over another here, then by all means, I support doing away with it. So far, all I see is a bunch of "this is wrong" without any logical explanation as to why.

Sorry, I really hope that wasn't me (OP). I wasn't accusing anybody here of anything. I myself use likes a lot. BUT I did watch another forum descend in a bunch of stupid popularity games that the mods found hard to control. On reflection I think 2 things contributed to that. (1) a large proportion of the forum membership was juvenile (I'm talking attitude, not age here) and (2) accumulated likes were displayed against members profiles.

I'm fairly sure that (1) doesn't apply here, so maybe (again, on reflection) this thread was unnecessary.

However, my original suggestion to deal with this was ONLY to remove display accumulated likes on member profiles. (My reasoning being that you're using 'like' to say you like a post, not necessarily that you like a member.)

FWIW your brownie points are displayed on every post you make. On the left, under your avatar, is a line that says "Likes Received: 52". And there's a list of members by number of likes here.

No offense intended - my remarks were referencing my experience on another forum where these points were called "reputation points". On that forum, when new folks showed up, the obvious assumption they made was that people with a lot of "Rep Points" had been extremely helpful and knew what they were talking about (and were given Rep points in return for their troubles), when in fact they were the last people you would want to take advice from.

Well after finding (and being directed to) everyone's points profiles, it seems JimmyM is at the top. Id say the only other person here who has more influence over people's gear decisions is bongomania who has a thorough and well made website and he's not even anywhere near the top, so I agree using the like feature is probably not the best way to base who one gets their info from.

I saw the feature as something fun, no more, no less. Funny enough, I think this is a place where its actually more useful than some of the silly uses of it I've seen on FB (someone dies, you hit a like button?!?!)

I also think that TB has a way of self policing itself and anyone at the top of the like heap won't be giving out bad advice for long before getting called out on it...just like most people who do here are. Just a lance at most other bass forums will show that TB is probably one of the safest places on the web to get bass related advice.

No offense taken, I just couldn't see what the issue was.

My post was not intended to offend anyone, but to be clear, I think that the effect of that thread in off-topic is exactly what you describe here.

+1. Yep, I think that's what the thread has turned into too - however, why do you care one way or another and no offense intended, but for the lack of a better word - are you just being a busybody?

NOTE: There isn't any posted TP rules against it. ;)
