Line 6 Bass Pod Express

Being based on the HX engine, the quality is obviously good. maybe..
However, two crucial things are missing.
There's a lot of unnecessary distortion on the amp channels, which is redundant since there's a separate distortion channel.
It would have been better to have the amp output only clean tones, and the first distortion item would have been to increase the gain of the selected amp.
It's difficult to turn the knobs every time in a live house, so you need to create a lot of presets, but it doesn't seem to display the preset number.

On the amp channels turn the gain down and that cleans them up quite a bit. It's definitely not as convenient to make multiple presets as a modeler with a screen would be, for sure.

I know this thread has been dormant for a couple of months, but I just got a Pod Express Bass and I like it a lot. I considered, and I might still get, a Tonex One Bass but my local GC had the PEB in stock so I took a chance. I got it as an all in one solution for an amp-cab sim/audio interface/headphone amp/practice setup, I dont gig anymore, but if I do I still have my 400RB and SWR Henry 8x8. I really have no need for the effects, but the amp/cab sim and the compressors sound good for what you pay. The default presets sound TERRIBLE though, with the exception of the Punch/800RB which sounds really good. A little work in the editor though and those presets can be made very good, and new presets can be quickly created. I made a quick one to simulate Klaus Floride's tone, just to see how it would turn out because I'm kind of on a DK kick right now. Klaus ran a Traynor Monoblock with a 215 cabinet, so I used the 800RB amp sim as a starting point but paired it with the Fender 215 cab sim and fiddled with the EQ until I got really close and it took about 15 minutes. Before the editor though, I can see why people were very disappointed, if I had bought this before the editor I would have returned it the same day. I'm really not sure why a company would put out a product like this (Line 6 is not alone) and have almost all of the stock presets sound like garbage. Also, without the editor its super non-intuitive to make changes to settings, but with the editor its very simple and easy.

considering one of these to replace a noisy GK 800RB preamp pedal. How are the clean amp models, run through a quality DI? I would primarily only be using this for the amp modeling.

If you primarily want amp modeling at this time I think I’d recommend the Tonex one bass for a few dollars more. The pod express is limited to the 7 models selected by line 6. Not that they’re bad but you get what you get. Also, I’d say 4 out of the 7 amp models are higher gain sounds.

I had never heard of this, just watched Nate Navarro's review, and I think this is what I'm looking for. Thank you. TB for the win again!
