I use my XT Live Bass as my only amp live and have never had a problem. I just plug and play (well, whoever is tech-ing for us does). It helps that we have our own FOH guy who knows EXACTLY what I want the crowd hear, most of the time he leaves the desk EQ flat though and just rides the fader.

I'm in the process of downsizing my set-up (yes, smaller than an XT Live) to my VT bass, tu-2, rat/ts, compressor and two channel DI.

To speak to the original question:

Your ears have different frequency response at different volume levels (called Fletcher-Munson curves). At low volumes, your ears are less sensitive to bass and treble, so when you play live at higher volumes with tones you crafted at low volumes, the tones are harsh and muddy because the bass and treble are perceived more easily.
