GMA 500 on Linux

"GMA 500 support on Linux is not optimal. The driver is developed by Tungsten Graphics, not by Intel, and the graphic core is not an Intel one, but is licensed from PowerVR. This has led to an uncertain mix of open and closed source 3d accelerated drivers, instability and lack of support.

Ubuntu is the Linux distribution that best supports GMA500 (Poulsbo), through the use of the ubuntu-mobile and gma500 repositories on Launchpad. Support is present for 8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10 and in an experimental way for 10.04, but the installation procedure is not as simple as other drivers and can lead to many bugs..."

"Wireless semiconductor vendor Broadcom announced yesterday that it has released an open source Linux driver for its latest 802.11n chipsets. The "still in progress" driver supports Broadcom BCM4313, BCM43224, BCM43225 Wi-Fi chipsets, enabling Linux distributions to include native support for these popular Wi-Fi chips, says Broadcom..."

If you're using a PC with a dual-core CPU and it won't install or boot into any GNU/Linux distro, then you may find this to be useful:

[Solved] Unable to install any Linux distro

Bottom line: some distros won't install or run on anything but a single CPU core on some multi-core machines.

On a dual-core (or more, I presume) PC the extra CPU cores will have to be disabled. (Googly, Googly... :))

In all likelihood there's some way to patch or compile a custom kernel which supports multi-core CPUs on some troublesome machines.

Ugghhh... My SPSS license expired. One step closer to eliminating windows from my routine...

PSPP - Statistical Analysis

Learning PSPP
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1296686

It's available in the System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager.

A description:

"Statistical analysis tool

PSPP is a program for statistical analysis of sampled data. It
interprets commands in the SPSS language and produces tabular output
in ASCII, PostScript, or HTML format.

PSPP development is ongoing. It already supports a large subset of
SPSS's transformation language. Its statistical procedure support is
currently limited, but growing.

Canonical does not provide updates for pspp. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."

According to this thread, PSPP currently isn't very good:

I can't get the compe to boot now, whether it is in windows or through a installer. It keeps saying boot fail, but is fully functional at the bios.

I've tried the staple installs of debian (both hd and net) through unetbootin and they failed, I also tried several install types of ubuntu.

Any idea whats causing the hangup?

Try booting into the BIOS, selecting the default setting (or however it's worded), and then rebooting.

it won't let me usb or cd boot out of bios. It just says boot failed, no reason or explanation, and if I hard drive boot, it won't let me use the hard drive as what I save my new os to.

I feel like fail right about now.
