Literally no lead singers around?

We do classic and modern rock, with a little bit of everything in between. None of it is extremely challenging in terms of lyrics and vocals.

Like bassists, though, a lot of singers want to do the kind of music that's a bit challenging for them. Abba, Adele... basically "singer type music". I have no trouble finding singers, but it's harder to find musicians who want to put up with the stuff I want to do (Inna, Avicii etc.)

Not saying you should change your whole setlist to make finding a singer easy, but if none of these candidates work out then yeah, you really might have to do the vocals yourself.

We're totally open to changing up our set list, and we make it clear to people that we're open to new ideas, etc. With our last drummer (the one who sang), we heavily altered our set list for him. But if people can't/won't show up to even audition it's pretty much a moot point.

re: the female lead singer, she lives nearly an hour and a half away. I made it clear that I was skeptical it would work out with that commute, but she swore up and down it wouldn't be a problem. Well, sorry, but no showing audition due to your car not working 8 hours before audition time means you're not going to work out, in my view.

I have found that there are plenty of singers available. The problem is, 99% of them sound horrifically awful.

Didn't catch the part about the female singer being an hour and a half away, that's a definite problem...count her out.

take a couple singing lessons. you'd be surprised by the world of difference proper breath support makes.

i was pretty awful at singing, and after a couple lessons from my girlfriend, i'm pretty decent at singing. i'm no marvin gaye or anything, but i can do what is needed for my band.

I may actually resort to that. One of the singers we auditioned (the guy who was awesome) mentioned trying to help us get better vocally. Too bad he didn't join...but maybe he could help me out with some lessons.

I suppose you could pre-record the vocals, and then just lip-synch on the gig...

Usually the best lead singers run their own bands. Why should they join someone else's band unless it is well-established and making good money?

Well, well established is pretty subjective, but I think we're doing well for this area, been around for nearly three years, and bringing in $100/man.

Anyway, we'll see how the guy does tonight (assuming he doesn't continue the streak of cancellations), and if he's not good we may just try to hack it as a three piece.

I'm fortunate enough to be in 2 bands that both have good singers....and neither one suffers from lead singer's disease. They both show up early and help load gear, and they both stay until the last piece of gear is loaded after a gig.

Guy last night was a train wreck...I felt bad for him, actually. He had said he was in two bands previously, but apparently that was quite a few years ago. Tough story, as he's an Iraq War veteran who was hit with an explosion, and lost a leg. Had to have a complete rehab on his trachea and vocal cords as well.

First ten seconds started out promising (kind of had a cool raspyness in his voice, which would have worked for most of our stuff), then he went "off the rails." No sense of timing, chord changes, song structure. After four songs, I politely showed him out.

We're going to press on as a three piece band for now. If some great singer happens to fall in our lap, great, but I'm done setting up auditions for now. It's more or less been a waste of time for us and we have paying gigs just around the corner to brush up for.
