"Live" audition

I tried to use cheat sheets. But the bandleader calls audibles Mid song for the next song. If I was grading my performance I would say I got a B+. I definitely blew parts but I nailed a lot of them also. The bandleader was impressed and I am now full-time member. After three gigs he now wants me to finesse his music. He gave me his recorded CDs done in a studio (I had learned everything from a live gig he recorded). It's an ongoing process.

We have auditions at practice. But we never ask anyone to join, no matter how good they are, until after a show. We've had some who kill it at practice, then get on a stage and fall apart.

To me, the wording means this difference:

auditions => no pay
fill in gig => pay.

Audition for no pay, we'll that's 3 songs and a chat about goals and future plans. That's an audition.

Fill in gig, is a fill in gig. It can also be an audition for future projects, but for that one night it is not an audition but rather a fill in gig with pay.

Agreed. Around here, when someone asks you for a "live audition", it usually means that the want you to play their gig for free. I recently received an unsolicited call from a band for an "audition" to replace their exiting bassist. The audition was at a 4 hour gig, 50+ songs. When I asked about pay, the BL says "well, this is an audition for you, we can't pay you". I declined the "audition" but gave the BL my pay requirements if he changed his mind. These types of auditions are even more frequent from the original music crowd, who are always coming up with original ways to get free musicians.

I wouldn't have a problem with a live audition if I was being paid as a sub and considered for the permanent slot.

Man that is just nuts!! There is a CL ad here in ATL that is similar- been on forever- "PAid gig with original alternative band" then it says pay is based on gigs, but they are also recording and want you to record their "great" songs for you guessed it $00.00.
Come to think of it there are 3-4 ads that have been on here in ATL that surprisingly these "great" bands haven't been able to fill for some reason in the last 2 years! Even though I have seen corresponding ads with bass players looking for a paid gig for the same amount of time. Go figure.
