Live Sound, GK Part 2

This is part 2, a series of comments or debate on live sound. Geared toward GK suporters and fans, if you will.



My comment about expensive gear was just a general comment.

I think with some, especially "rookie" bass players their is a misconception that the expensive rig will solve every bass issue. I don't think either of us agree with that, it's just not true.

I have been playing for 40 years and I have always felt that guitarist have it easier than bass players in regards to a solid , good /tight even signal that gets to the audience the right way.

Like I said, last night I was at a club with my publicist, and I made a comment;

"The *bass player has got a great thing going, the signal is tight, evenly balanced and positioned just right with the other instruments."

Her response,:

"What do you mean, what am I suposed to hear, what do you hear?"

This is very concerning to me, because just last week she complained in a club that the bass was to loud, booming and screwing up the other instruments.

Bottom line, it's tough for bass players. always has been probably always will be.

Or maybe I need a new publicist.

A lot of people can't differienciate gtr and bass , but they will be able to know when the lows are all over the place. They can "feel" it.

The problem then is that , it's not necesarily the bass players fault.
A lot of gtr players have more low end than bass players , even acoutic gtrs sometimes have a lot of low end , keys , sequences etc....

Also if the soundman have forgot to put the low cut on the mics all add up to a muddy low end.

Add to that the fact that a lot of bands don't give a S*** if the stage volume is too loud.

When your publicist heard too much bass , maybe it wasn't only the bass player fault.....:confused:

For live sound I normally use either a SansAmp BDDI or MXR M-80 to the board and use a JBL Eon G2 as a monitor rather than carrying around a huge rig. I've said before that my favorite live sound EVER was my 1001RB through my 410RBH and my G&L. The recording killed. It was so incredibly nasty. Thats all.
