I know this doesn't fit your required asthetics, but that's irrelavent when it's small enough to carry it out of the living room after practice. GK Backline 110 combo. I picked this one up at a GC Memorial Day sale for $100.

$100 ? Lesson learned, wait till the memorial sale! I payed around $180 at GC and that was a negotiated price, retail was over $200

I am looking for an affordable amp for my living room. It has to be

-Small
-Affordable (under 200 preferably)
-Asthetically pleasing enough to fit in with living room decor that will meet with my wife's approval. (i.e. wood grain or styled like vintage radio, etc.)
-Sound good, but great tone is not the object, just sounding good enough to practice on.

I have seen some really neat acoustic and electric amps that are pretty nice looking, but nothing for bass, except for Jay Turser vintage style, and Vox T-25, both of which are no longer produced.

I like my GK Backline 110 it may not be like a piece of furnature but it sounds good!

This one I tried at GC and really didn't like the sound at all, but I think I really should give it a second chance on a quieter day. It would look great as decor, and being that it's Berhinger and GC, I know I could get a good deal.

Here's an easy solution.

Just buy whatever amp you want, and then throw a cover over it. You can even let your wife pick out the cover so that it matches the decor.


Here's some examples:
No way my wife would go for this.

But throw a sheet on top, and add some dressing and she won't even know there is an amp under there.

No way the old lady would go for a NV610 in the living room.

But, honey don't you really like our new coffee table?

A cloth cover cannot only be tasteful, but cheap as well.

15 years ago, a friend of mine had a 20watt Dean Markley with an 8" or 10" speaker which sounded very sweet and its color was creme and dark brown. Try to look for one of those, they must be cheap.

Actually, in the nice older houses in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, it's pretty common for old cast-iron radiators to be dressed up with a radiator cover.

You could put whatever amp you wanted in a smaller version of a box like that, using speaker grill cloth for the front. Heck, throw together a medium-sized version, use the center section for your small bass amp, add storage or display space on either side, and you'll have a nice piece of functional furniture that your wife might not just tolerate but actually like.

Now there's an idea! I've lived in a couple places with these (they are all over Chicago) and I even know a place that makes them. They aren't cheap, but perhaps I could find one from a salvage shop....

YES!! It's perfect! Vintage looks, and it's battery operated, so I can take it on the porch or into the backyard! I think I may have found it! Not as cute as a fender princeton 600, but it seems to be just what I would need.

Anyone have experience playing through one of these?

plus, its portable! buy some rechargable batteries and a wall wart and you're good to go!

EDIT: I demo-ed one of these at this little bass shop in the middle of nowhere, and they're mean little guys. As I like to say, Pignose makes "good watts" nice, loud, and clear. crank it and it sounds like dirty goodness. It'll be the only amp you'll need in your house!

I wouldnt get the Fender Princeton 600, they sound like utter garbage with a bass through it. I plugged a 76? precision bass into it and ugh... it was terrible...
