LMII Cutting Out

Word to the OP,

I love my LMII dearly... but I struggled with intermittent output as well. I had the the board serviced, re-flowed, checked my cabinet (bergantino), tried other cabinets, etc., etc. All for naught. Very frustrating. I went through the same cycle of theorems and guesses that you've seen in this thread.

In the end, the solution was to use the 1/4" speaker output on the back instead of the speakon output. I bought a 1/4" to speakon, put the 1/4" in the LMII, the speakon in the Bergantino.

Two years and at least 400 gigs later, absolutely positively no cutting out. Try it and see if it works for you too. It was an inexpensive and bulletproof solution for me.

best regards & good luck

I'll definitely try this at rehearsal next time. Could there possibly be something wrong with my power conditioner? It was bought as a floor model, It's a Samson PS9. I'm wondering if it was damaged before it was sold to me and could possibly be causing these problems...

Give the 1/4" to speakon fix a try before worrying about the power conditioner. I have a feeling it will work for you because the symptoms you described were very similar to my own.

At the very worst you'll have a backup speaker cable...

That's the darndest thing! I wonder what would cause that? Good to know, in case my LMII ever acts up.

Sorry if I'm stepping on anybodies toes for jumping in the middle of this but I seem to have the same problem with my F1. I bought an F1 from a guitar center back in April and recently it has been cutting out at shows. The gain is usually set at 9'o clock so I've never had the clip light coming on and it doesn't seem to be overheating but on 3 occasions at about 30 minutes into a set the amp cuts out. If I turn it off for a few seconds and then back on it typically works for the next 20 minutes with no problems.
However at practice last week it cut out within the first 5 minutes. When I turned it off and turned it back on there was a static sound that got progressively louder until cutting off again. I didn't use it for the rest of practice and about and hour later I turned it on and played again for 10 minutes before I had to pack up and leave our practice space. Over the last week I have played through it a couple of times at low volume(gain=9o'clock, Master=9o'clock) for about 45 minutes before it cuts out.
I thought the problem might be that I use a Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI so I tried without it and got the same results. Also at the live shows the Tech 21 saved it because I was going direct to the house PA. Anyway, my gear is as follows: Ibanez EDB 405, Boss Chromatic Tuner, Tech 21 SansAmp BDDI, GK Goldline 4x10, and GK 115SBxII.

Sorry for the wall of text but I just wanted to make sure I was descriptive enough. I been lurking around here the past few days so I've tried different outlets and using different cabs but I get the same problem.

@RBasss- Did you ever read that topic at the other forum someone suggested on the first page, he said he sent off his Mark II and they found the power amp was faulty. I'm afraid that sending it off is gonna be the only real solution. I've already sent an email to Markbass earlier today and I'll let you know what they say.

What is the impedance of your cabinets?

Thanks,

After PM'ing Peter Murray I took my LMII back to GC and exchanged it for a new one. I haven't had a chance to check it with my rig yet but will be able to do so tomorrow. I'm hoping that I just had a faulty amp. I'll post what happens after practice tomorrow night.

that stated he plugged his rig into a solo outlet, shorter ext cord, etc at his practice space and was able to run fine the whole time? If so, what was different there than at times where the amp is shutting down? OP, Rbass, whomever, sorry I lost track but please be sure and come back and post with your solution, be very interested in what the fix was.

I emailed Markbass about my Speakon issues. I told him I was having problems with my speakon output. I traded my LMII for another and biught another Speakon Cable...same thing. If I held the speakon a certain way, it was fine. So I figured there must be a problem with the Speakon output on some LMII's.

The reply from Markbass asked if the two Speakon cables I bought had "neutrik" name-brand connecters or just generic. I figured a Speakon connector is a Speakon connector... So I haven't went to buy a Neutrik name brand cable, because the 1/4" cable has been working fine.

Is the LMII too picky about what kind of speakon connector? Or we're all unlucky to get bad generic connectors....

Thoughts ??

That was me, however I only played like this for a few minutes. I did this before I packed up my gear for the gig I had a few weekends ago and didn't really test it out as much as I probably should have. The difference was that when I first had these problems I was running a 50' extension cord to my power conditioner and was running additional powered monitors, etc. off of the same power source. At the gig I played at it was just my rig plugged into the single outlet when the amp started failing again. As I stated, the opening bands' bass players that night were plugged into the same outlet and they didn't have any issues with their setups (an SVT4 and Sansamp/Poweramp setups). I get to play through the new LMII I exchanged out for tonight so I'm hoping I can figure out what's going wrong. My speaker cables all have Neutrik Speakons, I do have one that is 1/4" to Neutrik Speakon so I'll try this out too and see if it makes a difference compared to the Speakon to Speakon cable I usually use. I hope I can nail down what's going on here.

Hi petersenbass, this one's for you:

Please see my posting above, I had a similar experience with the speakon output.

My guess (just a guess...) is that the LMII has a manufacturing inconsistency, either electrical or mechanical or both, with the speakon output jack. The intermittent nature of the issue has probably helped it slip by the Markbass QC. I sure had a lot of trouble diagnosing the problem.

All of the speakon cables I tried were neutrik, none of them fixed the problem. The solution was to use the 1/4" output. My suggestion is: don't bother wasting your time with their "neutrik" advice, keep using your 1/4" output!

Maybe someone from Markbass will read this thread and discover something endemic in their manufacturing process that leads to these intermittent failures... maybe they will sneak the fix in on a future board/mechanical revision. I can completely understand why they would keep this under wraps if they knew about it.

It's the only fault (functional or tonal) I've come across in this fantastic amp!

Is it just me, or are there others out there who will wait a few years before buying one of these little guys, to see how reliable they really are? Especially if they have to go back to Italy to be serviced??

There are SO many of us wumping these for a year or more under very harsh conditions with no problems at all. Not sure what is going on with the speakon jacks on a few of these above? That is strange. However, except for this thread, you see very few 'problems' with the MB gear on TB. Markbass has a published failure rate across their entire line of around .6 percent. That's within the acceptable 'under 1%' sort of range you expect on a quality product.

However, nothing goes back to Italy. MB has a fabulous warranty system. If something goes wrong, you get a new amp... done! Cool!

I had the problem on my 1st LMII, then exchanged it, the 2nd one had the same problem.

I just forwarded this thread to customor support at Markbass.

Unless there is a total breakdown on the manufacturing line (which can happen... where an entire run of units has the same problem), if you have identical problems with two new units, then there is a very high probability that the issue is due to something else in your signal chain. The probability of two new units having the same, identical problem is very, very low and highly unlikely.
