local guitard rant

it was a benefit thing for retired soldiers somewhere. my band will play anywhere for free just to get our name out there. once we're big enough we'll start getting paid. we've only had one paying gig and it got cancelled because it was at a yacht club outside and there was a hurricane watch
Sounds like they got the wrong gig. A metal band for a coffee gig? Thats rough. Expecting you to do sound for them, and demanding this of you is rough.
Guitards and singers always seem to have less of a firm grounding in music tech than bassists imho. In my band I can set up everybody else's gear but they would be lost with mine. My bassist friends report back the same thing. I've never played a bassist's bass and found it to be all gunky, rusty and have rancid strings but many guitards keep their guitars in the bare-minimum of working conditions.
However this does not seem to stop them from being demanding with sound engineers. I nearly died when my singer asked one engineer for "cathedral" on the mixing desk and "more cathedral" for a certain song. He meant reverb but I guess he only knows the language that effects makers invent for their tiny singer brains to understand.

Sounds like you got pretty much what you signed up for. Playing for free, supplying PA for free, running PA for free. No good deed goes unpunished and all that. Try this next time: NO
you filled the room with dancing people,
provided a pa system for the entire event for free,
performed for free,
and in return for all the hard work you were verbally abused by the promoter and another artist.
time to rethink yer strategy (or come up with a real one).
you are screwing yourself, i think these people abused you because you allowed it and it really isn't healthy for anyone,
most important, you.
as you can probably tell, i have the same story a dozen times over.
