Many good points have been made in this post, but they all hinge on YOU the bass player to have a good sense of time. You need to internalize it and know where ONE is with nobody else playing. The same goes for EVERY member of your group. If the rhythm section is smoking and the lead instrument has no sense of time guess what? The ryhthm section will fall into that players time (or lack there of).
