Hard to argue with the Stingray recommendation.

I'd also give MTD Kingstons a look, in particular the Artist and Heirloom models. It's a matter of personal preference of course, but these are my favorite 5'ers in that price range.

Anything from the ESP Ltd. B, D, or F series. I absolutely love, in the dearest sense, everything about my ESP.

I've had my F-205 for years and it is the best bass I've ever played. Even over the custom boutique types that run for thousands of dollars.

(Instert troll statements about stingrays and warwicks here.)

A used Rebop shouldn't be overly difficult to find within your price range, and if you're patient, a Euro 5 may appear. The Euros are neck-through and have the nicest neck I've ever played.

Above all else, take your time and play as many of the suggested basses as you can. $1k is a lot of scratch, and ultimately what works best for you in terms of tone and feel can only be determined by you. Good luck, and have fun shopping!

Assume you're referring to the import series like the Legend... very good basses..

The G&L Tributes are very nice also...

For my money one of the best basses avail under $1,000 is the new Sterling BY Musicman Ray35.

Peavey Cirrus all the way. You will not be disappointed. You can probably pick up a used US model for around $800-$1000 or if you want something brand new, the Cirrus BXP's are high quality bang for the buck (around $400-500 or less), with the same electronics as the US version.

In fact, I've got a BXP 4 string and get nothing but compliments on the tone.

Actually, I was thinking of the Rebops, and surprisingly, many neck through Euros. Probably due to being built in a former COMBLOC nation, Czech made Spectors don't appear to hold their resale pricing like MIA Fenders and Musicmen or German Warwicks, creating real bargains for players who are looking for quality playability and tone.

I'm a big believer in Czech craftsmanship - I own a 9mm CZ pistol that is top notch in performance and build quality at a price point hundreds less than comparable Swiss or German models. In fact, my satisfaction with the Czech made gun is what led to my initial interest, and subsequent purchase, of a Euro 4LX. :)

Thanks to all the replies. I have read them all and looked up everything that has been recommend to me. After looking online I found someone selling a Warwick Thumb 5 Bolt On for about $1000 and another person selling a Bepop 5 for around the same. Are these good deals? I've seen pictures and they both look like they are in good condition. Should I pick either one of these up? Could anyone tell me what I could expect the differences to be between the two. I've never really played either of them before, although from the things I've heard online and stuff it seems like both would be a good option for me either which way I decide to go.
