IMHO the best neck, as Bunny says himself a neck like a Jazz neck but a little wider for the fifth string and 3/4 in string spacing at the bridge.
I bought my Stingray 5 with matching headstock for $950 shipped used. Hard to beat and built like a tank. Growl for days and a very comfortable 5.
used warwick double buck thunderly lows low mid growl....older american precision deluxe nice defined growl on the double jazz humbucker...both for 1000ish used
Page 3 before someone mentioned a P-bass..
I was gonna say, a used American Standard Precision 5 from 2008 or later can be had for under $1,000, and it will out-growl an angry dog.

Since when was a P bass a growl monster? Don't get me wrong, I love what a P bass does, but I wouldn't reach for one for growl.
For growl, nothing... NOTHING will beat a MusicMan Stingray 5. Added bonus is that the new re-issues have the string dampeners. Plus for under 2 grand, you won't find a more solid chunk of wood.

Seriously if you want growl there are only a few choices to consider:
G&L L2500 or L1505 I can recommend as I've owned them. The L2500 is more versatile, but the 1505 is definitely more aggressive.
Musicman (Sterling is more aggressive than the Stingray so I'd recommend that) You could get one of the import Sterling models for half of your budget and get 90% of the way to the US models, maybe more.
Anything Warwick will probably work.
Spectors are also pretty aggressive.
A good J bass can get you there as well. You could get one of the new Squier's that they have with the Basslines pickups and probably be happy. They are definitely on the aggressive side, even for a J bass.

Growl? Spector invented it. Never heard a MM growl. Rattle n honk maybe. But not growl.
You can fight with that clumsy chunk of wood all you want.
Warwicks have some growl as well. The streamer is a Spector copy after all. The thumb is a different animal and also a great bass with good growl (mudvayne). Wicks in general usually have a decent growl though.
Thumbs are badass and one of the growlist basses. I have a 4 and love it. Heavy for long gigs but I switch around with other basses for tones anyway. Can be neck heavy. Try before you buy, but best tone IMO for growl.
I love my '97 AmDlx J V. I'm blown away by how much low mid grunt I can get out of it. Keeping the mid up, adjusting the bass and treble controls, and using the pup blend allow you a bit of control over whether you're getting some low mid grunt or some higher mid growl. The Suhr pups and pre definitely give it a much different tone than what you expect out of an active jazz bass. Used, they can be had for much less than a grand.
