Looking for a Fender bass

What tone are you aiming for ?

I wasn't so much looking for a specific tone, this is actually my first bass, I had narrowed it down to a Jazz, then just played a bunch until I found the Geddy, the feel of the neck really clinched it for me. I also really liked the 'openness' of the sound and sustain from the the BA bridge. I did like the MIMs too, I was thinking of swapping the bridge too if I went with one. The Geddy has a nice growly tone, I dont know if its the pickups though, it has the same quality unplugged. The pickups dont seem to have the same level of power as the CV Jazz I had been playing for a while (running thru the same rig, I found I had to turn the amp up more) but the tone sounds more powerful (if that makes sense) I've had it for a month and I'm really happy with it

The kind of tones I'm going for are mostly old school, Bootsy Collins/JB style funk, Eric Wilson/Aston Barrett style reggae, John Paul Jones style rock. I have no issues getting tones I like, except for installing a thumbrest, I dont see myself making any mods anytime soon. Though as I said, I am new to bass, I dont know how much stock should be put into my opinions :D

This might be a little off topic, but... If I was buying a bass to play music like the OP posted above, I'd get a modern sounding 5-string like a Lakland 5502. With that you get the extra low notes plus all the onboard tone shaping you could ever want for finding frequencies within the huge guitar/drum soundscape. A 5502 can sound like a Jazz bass, too. It's a bass that works in almost any musical context, and it comes stock with fantastic fretwork, a great bridge, great tuners, excellent pickups and preamp.
