Looking for a funky old short scale...

There is a bass in the shop down the street from me that is exactly what you're looking for.
It's red, I think it's Teisco, something similar, shorter than 30", ridiculously funky.
So go for Teisco.

Hey Guys,

I'm looking to pick up some kind of funky old short scale bass so I can string it with piccolo strings and have some fun.

With a budget of about $700, what are my options? I was thinking danelectro (I dig those old shorthorns) but I'm interested in hearing some others.

Not sure of your definition of "funky" but the Dano Longhorn is an odd duck short scale that plays darn nice right out of the box.

My wife refers to it as my "butt ugly bass" but I kinda think its so odd it's almost cool.

I've long contended that an ideal piccolo bass isn't short scale; based on my experiences, the best sounding piccolo basses were all long scale (34").

Agreed. There is certainly nothing wrong with short scale for piccolo. But I prefer the timbre that long scale gives to piccolo bass as it seperates it from standard guitar and baritone.
