looking for a good 5 string

im getting into a big heavy metal/death metal band & i would like to get a 5 string what would be a good entry level 5 string. im an intermediate bass player & my budget is 1300, used would be fine just need an idea of what kind of basses to look at

Used Ibanez BTB. You can get one for HALF your budget or less. I have two and I love them! I've done well over 1,000 gigs with one of them. And I have played every style of music you can think of. The fretboard is slightly wide, but that makes it even BETTER for me. I'm a bit heavy-handed so it gives me a little extra room to dig in (especially when I get wound up on stage). Some have Barts and some don't. I have one with and one without. I tend to like the standard Ibanez pickups a little better than the Barts (especially for harder music). The Barts are a little too "polite" sounding for rock. Check out the BTB405QM. I got mine used for $275 (which was a STEAL) but you should be able to find one for $500 or less. Good luck!

+1

I just snagged a BTB455 a few weeks ago (for only $300, I might add), and I agree that because of the wider string spacing (which makes the transition to a 5er easier for me), the neck takes some getting used to.

Despite having the "polite" Barts, it also has a Vari-Mid 3-band EQ. I spent a few days learning a song that could take advantage of the low B. Metallica's Wherever I May Roam sounded downright rude!!

If you play metal, Ibanez is always a good choice. Thin, quick necks and great basses for the money. Personally though, I've never come close to feeling like I could destroy the world like I did when I put my Stingray 5 through a Big Muff pedal and played through my GK 800RB. That pre-amp on the SR5 is a beast!

1300 isn't entry level....for that $, I'd go with a Warwick Corvette a-la Jennifer Arroyo:

But I'd get the $$ version

agree on the Warwick $$. I have got one and it is my favorite 5 string I have ever had. For reference it was preceded by a Stingray 5 and a Lakland 55-01.

The 55-01 is amazing for the price but I could not hang with the 35" scale.
