Looking for a loud and small Combo.

Never understood the "got to be a combo" mentality.

Is it really that hard to remember to plug in a speaker cable ?
never understood the one-note bias of some here towards head and cab as the only real solution to all bass players situations.

whether you agree or not, combo's are a good solution to some players needs

Haven't been on this site in ages, however, as an owner of a Zon Sonus 6, fretless 6 string: Low B, to High C.

My 2 cents since 2009 recommends GC Acoustic line. I own (2) of their 200 watt rigs (1x15 w/horn) and they have plenty of power, tone, etc. I have no complaints.

Their most powerful head meets all of your watt requirements and with a choice of 1x15 w/ horn or 4x10 w/ horn, you will have no issues with having plenty of stage volume as well as dedicated D/I.

Also probably the least expensive of all bass rigs.

Good luck and keep us posted.

If I were the OP I'd check out: Barefaced Bass - FR800 high resolution active loudspeaker
800 watts into a single 12 that can handle them. 33lbs - toss a preamp pedal in your gig bag and you're set for 99% of gigs.

Barefaced Super-Midget cabinet! £599 + £30P&P
112, 8 ohm, small, light, low, loud, made in UK.

A 600 watt @ 4 ohms head would work, but that is more like 300 watts at 8 ohms.
I'd get a used micro head with 800 watts @ 4 ohms.

well, except 1k UK Pounds is not chump change (about $1,535 today), and he still asked for a combo solution and not a head/cab.
I'm sure you mean well, but the mechanical repetition of GB as the answer to all needs, all the time, gets a bit tiresome. ;)
Who said anything about what the number represents? Only you. That's the number the OP stated. Wouldn't have suggested what was suggested otherwise. You aren't even sure if what you suggested is available at his number. Or actually, if it's even available at all. And what CL400Peavey & I suggested still beat the ever-lovin' $hyte out of a combo. And the suggested possibilities are definitely available in the U.K.

in your case, its the silly GB hyperbole that is so predictable - the one true solution to all needs (never mind what question is actually being asked)
and all the combo options listed so far will be available in the UK as well, probably close to the OP's budget.

to the OP, good luck on your search, I hope you find what works for you. My apologies, for my part, I did not mean for this to break out into the all too familiar combo vs head/cab ping pong match - with a bit of GB hysteria thrown in for good measure.

enjoy!

You know, friend , there are a number of other fellas who are suggesting separates. Perhaps you should realize that they're very valid suggestions instead of dismissing them out-of-hand because they don't conform to your rule that only what strictly applies to a question can be addressed.

And, contrary to your post, there's nothing silly about the suggestions in the least. They're all high quality solutions. And different. A couple 3-ways. A 2-way. A wonderful, hard-hitting, & tiny 2x8 & mid. And again, all readily available for the OP in the U.K. for under his budget.

Just recently went thru this. Ended up getting a TC BH250 115. 30 lbs. So far it's working out. Played some small venues and will soon use it with PA support. My only comparison with this was a 115 250 watt Mark Bass on sale for 50.00 more than the TC. It was a toss up between the two. At first I thought the Toneprint thing was kind of gimmicky. But now I think it's kind of nice to try out 10 different types of compression programs right before I play, or switch between them on the fly. This amp is growing on me.

well, mostly you, CL and Dr Jim, who reliably and reguarly provide GB answers to non GB questions.
but hey, might as well be consistent. :roflmao:
nearly every one else provided a combo answer to a combo question.
good luck OP

I am sincerely sorry if what I contributed to this thread frustrated you or made you angry.

Please do not take offense, and do take comfort in the simple fact that most people seeking advice about combos actually buy combos.

Your criticism is justified in that I do very regularly suggest alternatives to combos often involving GK micro heads—n.b. I have owned many combos since 1963, and used a dozen more regularly. I also recommend other micro heads, but it is hard to beat GK for micros since GB closed. For the record, I own a GB Shuttle 6.0, a GK mb800, and used to have a PF-350. I also own and use an M9 and a CA6.

I think it is fair to allow alternative points of view, and I always welcome yours.

BTW, contrary to your post, I did not suggest GK above, per se, I only wanted to point out that there are 8 ohm 112 cabs that really call for ~500 watts (Barefaced Super-Midget), and that a 500 watt@ 4 ohm amplifier as the OP described doesn't really deliver that. There are several micro-ish amps that fit that bill.

Finally, IMHO, a light cab and a super light head are easier to transport, repair, expand and achieve world peace with, OK? ;) :)

It is. Doesn't get smaller/lighter/louder. The MB sound isn't for everyone, but this little amp is SOOO portable and loud that it's hard to beat. I don't gig mine but it travels for jams and such.

I like those MB 121's too, especially for a coffee house and upright, but I am under the impression the OP want's something gig-worthy for 6-string for as many situations as possible.

Great suggestion, nearly optimal, except for the 99 quid more than the stated budget and the fact it's not a completely self-contained unit since it needs an external preamp as you said. But the OP would be hard pressed to find anything comboidal better than this at the same price, IMO. And it does PA duty if you need it to.
