Looking for a more polite 1x15 cab

Another cab will probably fix the distortion problem but it sounds like you might be a jazz bass guy .

HA! I was JUST going to post this and I saw u beat me to it,

u should play around with one,maybe a rosewood/alder jazz..
also consider a Jazz with a modern preamp, Aguilar,Sadowsky..

maybe try not to depend on your cabinet too much live, if possible.
ask the engineer to put more bass through your monitor, if u have one near..and turn down a bit,
 
I sure love the Mesa Powerhouse 115. They are really well made and have a very smooth tone without the honk of some 115 cabs. The horn is very sweet and can really add a nice sheen if desired but isn't harsh or brittle.

Quality answer. The build quality is world class. The ability to change the crossover frequency and level of the horn is nice too.
