Looking for a relatively quiet, higher quality amp

If you want character the ashdown 30W stubby is great and so is the little bastard.
the new lb302n has a post tx DI and an internal load you can run it silently when the need arises. It also has twonotes cabsim built in on a second DI out.

If you like the ampeg sound the pf50T also can run on internal load so silent or driving speakers.

these are not inexpensive but they sound great and have real character.

Otherwise the pjb stuff might be the ticket.

I, too, second the Phil Jones equipment, but also, the GK MB150 is its own kind of special...if you can find one.

Preamp pedal of your choice with an EV ZLXP-12 powered speaker. Can go low volume, medium volume, play backing tracks, connect a mixer, use indoor/outdoor for party music, connect a mic for karaoke, etc.

I'm a very satisfied owner of a Warwick Gnome I Pro with 300W and USB interface, very small and portable, weights less than 3 pounds and sounds great.

Stack that with a small 1x10 or even 2x10 and you're done

I'm surprised no one ever mentioned them.

I'm assuming you want a "combo" amp with speaker? Not two separate pieces. I find the phil jones stuff dissappears in an outdoor venue oddly. Was doing a gig on a trailer, and after moving over 8ft from the 6 piranha speaker cab, the bass all but disappeared. Even with a Genz Benz transporter 900 to boot. Indoors it seemed to work better. Just my experience. If you wanna save a few bucks and get a great combo, SWR redheads were always a fav of mine, and can be found used at great prices. There's one on Reverb now for $399. Eden Metro 2x10 is basically the same. also avail under $500. if weight is an issue, the the GK MB-115-II is very light and will handle anything you'll throw at it.

Just note that the fan on the Walkabout/Scout is pretty loud by today's standards.

True, I just played one today (been a while) and didn't find it distracting.

The PJBs are cool and there are a few in the classifieds, also a few on Guitar Center used if you want to pick one up with a generous return policy. I keep thinking about picking up a red one up to hide in the living room, think it would fit in nicely with the decor.

Lots of recommendations for PJB. If you want a combo and size is THE most important deciding factor they're probably as good as it gets but I have to admit I was rather underwhelmed the first time I played one. They're not exactly cheap and after all the hype I had expected more. If size is NOT an issue I would perhaps consider something else but this will of course depend very much on what kind of tone you're looking for and how much volume you actually need.

I play my Darkglass MT900 at 2 ohms with my Schroeder 1210PL and Schroeder 1515+L at low volume, best sound I’ve ever gotten for low volume playing. Not quite sure if it’s the 2ohms or using 2 vastly different flavored cabinets together with a considerable amount headroom. But wow!
Also, the Darkglass has 2 DIs so you can have both pre/post at the same time with selectable and downloadable impulse responses that also go to the headphone out!

I still really like my little Ibanez Promethean 3110. For what you describe, tracking down a GK MB150 would also be great - they sound wonderful at bedroom levels.

+1 on PJB if you want to buy new. They are great and the form factor is tough to beat.

I'm looking for an amp that is lower wattage and volume, but is higher quality than the typical low watt beginner offerings from most companies. I'm thinking around 150 watts or less. I specifically don't need or want loud stage volume. Basically something I can use for indoor rehearsal (by myself, sans drummer or guitar player) but higher quality than the typical 50 watt amp sold for beginning bassists.

A DI is a plus.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Traynor YBA-100. Reasonably priced, Canadian-made, all tube, great EQ and voicing, DI pre- or post EQ. And only 22lbs.
