Looking for bass body and neck for experimenting

Hey folks,

I'm looking for a cheap p-style bass to experiment with modding.

Long story short, I'm getting gnarly synthy wolf tones from my cheap chinese-made bass (even when unplugged) unless I bring the action waaay up, and I was wondering if I'd be better off switching my electronics to a Squier or a diy kit.

Pretty much how it looks now. However just yesterday I yanked out the mudbucker:

-1st switch (3-way) switches between the mudbucker and p-bass pickups, with middle position being both.
-1st concentric knob is vol and tone for the mudbucker and p-bass pickups.
- 2nd concentric knob is vol and tone for the mm pickup, and
- 2nd switch (also 3 way) runs MM pickup in series, split and parallel.

I like the set-up, but have decided I may prefer a blend knob instead of separate vol's & tones and I'll likely add an onboard preamp, and yes, move the MM further from the bridge.
