Double Bass Looking for Figured Bass Lessons

Actually I get the figured bass concept, but I need musical examples to work with to practice! Does anyone know where I can find some?

All you need is Baroque score; maybe a trio sonata. But unless you know the conventions of Thorough Bass you will be lost. Are you with the classical symbols for notating chord inversion ? what a sharp sign "over " a note stands for ?

Check out the Tonal Harmony book written by Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne. It's excellent, thorough, and fairly user friendly.

Ever tried Piston? Compared to Piston, KP is "Dick and Jane".

yeah, i prefer Piston. I had to use Koska through many undergrad classes... it is chock full of knowledge but it assumes a level of musical familiarity that many do not have.

My ultimate favorite theory book is by Heinrich Schenker- But then I am a Schenkarian by training...

Piston was my first, then Ottman. Both very dry.

I have both Kostka and Payne, and Ottman. The two books are very different, but both usefull. I would suggest the Kostka and Payne first, and then following up with Ottman, since KP is much easier to read. Ottmann is very dry and confusingly written IMO, but covers a smaller amount of material more thoroughly.
