Double Bass Looking for good bag that definitely will fit a Kay M1.

Hey there-

We're still in the hunt for a bag for our 1966 3/4 Kay M1. The lower bout measurement on the bass is 26.5". Seems like most of the bass bags that post dimensions are 26" max unless you go with the large size, but then the rest of the bag seems like it would be too large for the bass. This is our first double bass so this is also our first shopping experience. It's a bigger deal than we thought trying to find something that will definitely work. Don't want to get something to small and have to return it. So, we would sure value hearing from anyone who has experience with using a case this particular bass. Any Kay owners out there... or those who know the answer to our question?

When out of the house, the bass will travel in a 5x8 cargo trailer with it's own divided-off space. Maybe on the road with it about 30 days per year. Looking for a good, affordable bag.

I've got one of the lowest priced Gollihur bags and my kay fits just fine.

Kays are built to educator standard specs, so any 3/4 bag should fit fine. I have an old TKL bag (stiff, clunky), a Scherl and Roth (not enough zipper), a generic unpadded cover, and a Gollihur bag, which is great. I won't buy another one that doesn't open full length.

I have 3 different bags ranging from thin, to medium, to heavy padding and they all work with my carved bass and my 56 Kay M1 - not a problem.

Yes, that one. Easy to put on and take off. Not as thickly padded as a Bobelock I have, or a Messina or some others.

Yes, that one. Easy to put on and take off. Not as thickly padded as a Bobelock I have, or a Messina or some others.

There is a deceptive difference in the type of foam used; the padding in the Gollihur bag (and other similar bag designs) is not as "thick" but it has a layer of much denser closed-cell padding in place of open-cell foam "smushiness" so, despite being thinner, the protection level is probably equivalent (or better) for the kind of abuses that a bass in a case might endure. Think of the difference as sort of like comparing a pillow stuffed with light pillow fluff and a pillow made of dense solid neoprene.
