Currently I'm using a Warwick Corvette and a Peavey Max 110, which is all I could afford at the time, and I decided I'd try and save up for a new amp... well I currently have about $450 saved (and no job) but the job search is over for me, so I should be raking in minimum wage in no time as soon as I get myself together and talk to some people.
I'm not sure how much I'm willing to spend. I'm thinking of buying a 115 and some type of head, and I'd like to keep the head as cheap as possible, but with the traits I'm looking for, I don't know if it'll be possible. I'd prefer not to spend more than $600 on the head, but I would buy used, and I could spend more if it's worth it.
Basically I'm looking to get a lot of growl out of my Wick Corvette. Preferably as much as I can (within a reasonable price). I'm looking for that aggressive growl, one similar to Ryan Martinie's sound on Mudvayne's LD50 album. (Particularly in the song "Internal primates Forever"). In a nut shell, I;m looking to really release that Warwick sound.
Currently, I can get my E string to growl to an unbelievable extent, and I love it. It's my lo-mids that seem to really be lacking that growl, and I can't seem to EQ my amp to get the sound I want.
I've been looking around, and I've read that tubes will go a long way for what I'm looking for. If I'm not mistaken, Martinie uses an all-Ampeg rig, so I'd assume that'd be the place to start. I've also been hearing that Aguiler can give you some nice growl, but I'm not sure if that's what I'm looking for in terms of growl, since I've never had any experience with Aguiler, and everyone's definition of growl seems to be different. I've also heard that Warwick heads and cabs can really help with the growl, since they'll help "unleash" my Corvette.
So, if I'm looking to get a lot of "natural Warwick growl" from the lo-mids and the E string, what would you guys suggest? Ampeg? Warwick? Aguiler?
With my price range, I'm not sure if tubes will be possible, unless I get some type of Ampeg combo amp. Unfortunately, my Guitar Center's selection of bass amps is extremely weak, which is why I'm posting hear. I'm looking for your suggestions on specific brands/models so I can hunt them down and try them out.
