Bingo - that's it! Plus i just found the receipt (I'm actually smarter than I thought - it was still in the gig bag that came with it. It's an SR690TC P/J and it was $500 and I bought it in June of 1992. I guess my memory of that time of my life is fuzzy - no idea why that might be the case...

I feel awful for devaluing it in my mind. I actually thought it was a SR190 or something!And now my, "I have a crappy bass and really need a new one because it's embarassing to play with people" excuse I gave my wife isn't quite as true. I guess I'll have to go with the "But I REALLY NEED a 5-string" approach.

No problem. Now, back to your original question. If I were you, I'd wait until the NYC trip and check out the Sterling and Skyline 5's, because a Soundgear and fretless Jazz have very thin necks, which means the L-2500's chunky neck might be uncomfortable to you.

I would say buy used, there's a couple of USA G&L L2000's in the classified right now in your price range....

What about a cort curbow V since you want a 5 string? Then fix it and get a new pickup if you don't like it's (not so quality) Bartolini. Test it NY... The Ibanez is ganna hold for a few more while

Thanks all. Good point about the neck, Dan - I did notice the "chunkyness" of the G&L neck when I played it.

I think I'm gonna play a few more and take the time time to find "the one". In the mean time I can hone my fretless skills.

And I will definitely keep looking at the classifieds here!
