Looking for my 2nd amp (combo or amp+cab)

Background - I mainly play for my personal enjoyment. Have an MTD Kingston Heir 5 (2008ish), with just upgraded nordstrand pickups and preamp. My current amp is an combo Ampeg BA112 (version 1).

While I think it's "fine", I feel like there's something missing. Listening to other bass players and friends, their combos have a certain "growl" or "bite" to their tones, or a "soul" on melodies. Mainly gospel or christian music.

I'll admit, could be me, or the bass, but I think the amp itself isn't going to blow socks off. I'm in a small apartment so I don't need lots of volume, and I'm more interested in quality.

Not going to gig with this so whatever works. Any quick thoughts or recommendations? No hard budget, but let's say around a grand?

This is old, you probably have moved on. But for the benefit of any readers: I’m a longtime owner of an ampeg ba112 v1 (50W). It’s great for home practice but underpowered for most gigging. When pushed, it “farts” and loses volume. It’s tolerance seems to drop the longer it is played during a single session. But again, for home practice it’s a good buy, and it is light and portable for practice away. For gigs, you simply need more overhead.
