Looking for new rig ... Rachel Bolan tone

I'm in the market for an entire new bass rig, and I was looking for some advice. I currently don't have a bass rig at all, I've just been playing through headphones, but I'd like to buy an amp rig that I can use for band practices / small club (<100 people) gigs. The complete rig needs to fit in a small car, and I'd like to keep it under $500 (new or used).

I would try to describe the tone I'm looking for, but it's hard to put in words, so I started to listen to some CD's to see if I could find it. Then I realized exactly which tone I'm looking for: Rachel Bolan's tone on the beginning of Psycho Love. That is the exact tone I'm looking for.

Anyone have any suggestions on amps / effects to get this tone?

I understand in a live scenario he uses Spector, in a recording environment he's used P basses. IIRC, at least live, me thinks he uses GK heads and Ampeg cabs (Though I may be wrong)
I could recall an interview , where he discussed always recording with a P , but you'll see alot more live pic with a Spector

In the background, looks like a 800rb (maybe) Definitely an Ampeg cab.

Usually about 1 in 1000, you'll see him live with a Pbass (from his myspace page):
