Thanks for the insight everyone, I feel like I’m also leaning towards Aquila 22s and (varnished) gamut on top.

For those of you that settled on this setup, what gauges of G/D did you land on to get a nice even tension?

For me…
Pistoy varnished D - light or light plus
Lyon varnished G - medium or medium plus

I did. The answer was that this was not out of the ordinary and it was unrealistic to expect longer life from the winding on a thin gut string. F*** You in other words.

Sorry to hear that. This has not been my experience dealing with them. Mine was positive.

Wanted to thank everyone again for the recommendations. These strings, especially the Pistoy D are exceptional. It's given me confidence to go up the neck with gut. It's made my want to play the bass even more. Initially I gasped at the price. But they really are worth it. Wish I would have pulled the trigger long ago on these.

Edit: just came from practice and feeling that extra love after a good rehearsal.
