That is the best approach.
When you’re dealing with a resonant circuit, the total inductance is the most critical factor with a direct impact on tone. And none of the components in a passive guitar are precision devices. Pickups, caps, pots, and even the wiring contribute capacitance and resistance, and all have fairly sloppy tolerances. And this impacts inductance. So you need to try different components in different combinations if you really want to sculpt the sound.
Something to try: add a small value trimmer resistor between the pickup’s hot lead and the volume pot and tweak it. Small shifts in a pickup’s resistance can have a noticeable effect on its sound. I’ve done that a few times and got some good results.
