A very low gain overdrive, set with just a tiny bit of drive, will give you more harmics so the filter's motion stands out more, but won't sound distorted or too synthy like it might if you used fuzz. Run the OD before the EF.
That's what I'm leaning toward either a overdrive or compressor before the envelope filter. Which one would bring my mids out more?
