Looking to buy used MIM P (help)

So I need a P bass. I was going to buy new, but why pay full price? That new bass smell wears off pretty fast. Anyway I was curious if there was a certain year(s) to stay away from. As in a bad manufacturing year. Also what are common problems that I should look for or be aware of? When I find said bass I plan on moding it a bit, bridge, pots, ect. So I'm not too concerned about those issues. Thanks

If you're looking for a MIM, I'd recommend that you try out a Classic '50s P. They're MIM, and are great-sounding P's. If you like it, look for a used one to save some bucks.

But try one before buying one used. You might not like the neck if you have small hands. But if it feels comfortable to you, they seem to be consistently high in quality. I played about 5 or 6 new ones and they all sounded great. Then I was lucky enough to find a good deal on a used one.
