LoPhat Cabinets

Hey all, I talked to Paul for a while today and am going to put one of his 1x12's through it's paces at my next gig. This is a smaller club so I think I should be able to get by running the single 12 through my GK 500MB which will produce 350w (the 1x12 is an 8ohm cab).

In my discussion with Paul today I had asked if a single 12 at 4ohms will be on the list as well as maybe a single 10 running at 4ohms. My thought is that there are a lot of guys looking to lessen their overall rig footprint while retaining as much power and volume. As you would imagine, these things are already running through Paul's mind!

I am excited to try the 1x12 by itself on a gig. My ideal cab would be a 3 way 12 at 4ohms...maybe I can get Paul to make one that I can test out!!

any ideas on prices yet? I am highly interested in getting a 2x12. I jam with two bands and currently have two peavey tvx 4x12 cabs. they're about 130# so i have two so that each one can stay at a different place. would be much better to have just one cab. Also the peavey's aren't quite as clear sounding as I might like...

Honestly, I like the sound of Mo'Phat playing a LoPhat:D

They put theirs on a sesame seed bun...we use a regular bun. They have the golden arches...we have the golden arcs.

...I guess I can't call my DIY cabinet The Mo'Phat for risk of copyright infringement!

/kidding, I'm probably not naming it and certainly not mass-producing it. With my woodworking skills, I wouldn't want my name on it!
 
Getting closer to production. Late September early October. Website should be up Mid-September. Some cool stuff.
In a 3 way configuration: 1x15, 1x12, and a vertical 2x12
There's a 1x10 mini that's 23"W x 17"D x 14"H with a Beyma UL that handles 350W AES & 700W Program, I have been playing through it and it is killer, honestly I have never heard a single ten kick like this. Next I need to hear these as a stack. anyway a couple of production shots. BTW, the drivers and components are loaded so we can balance the cabs to cut the handles.

Love that V212 Paul. I would order it without the tweet and have you scoot the mid right in line with the 12's.

Bad idea. From the great audio resource section at Link Removed (bracketed text is mine, as is added emphasis):

"The absolute worst enclosure is a circular tube (cylinder), with the driver mounted in the exact centre of an end-cap. The response ripples caused by this are extreme, but with most systems this is not an issue, since this would be a very unusual shape for an enclosure [unfortunately this is common, though, for cheapie sealed midrange enclosures].

The response in a cylinder shows fluctuations in level that are quite unacceptable, and it is not a shape I would recommend to anyone. A cube is little better, and again the effect is made very much worse if the driver is mounted in the centre. Because these shapes are (or should be) avoided altogether, I have not included any response graphs."

"The overall behaviour is greatly improved with any mounting method if you ensure that the centre of the driver is a different distance from each edge of the box. These distances should be "non-harmonic", which is to say that they should be different, but in such a way that no one distance is an even multiple of any other."

Thes things are true both for baffle placement, and for placement within the internal space.

+1. You hate to rain on a guy's parade, but when you see so many basic rules of loudspeaker design being ignored you have to wonder what knowledge base the designer is operating from. Staggered woofers are better than horizontal, but vertical is better still. Running a two-way woofer/tweeter instead of woofer/mid is very poor practice, as is mounting a midrange and tweeter horizontal to each other, let alone their being separated by more than the minimum distance possible. The lack of panel to panel bracing is what manufacturers do to keep costs down, only getting away with it because it's out of sight. Other than making the cabs large enough to allow the woofers to work I really don't see anything here that improves upon what's already available from a myriad of manufacturers, nor do I see anything that approaches the design quality of greenboy's fEarful.
 
Just keep in mind APHEX was a mistake....
