Losing Volume on Higher Notes - Help!

I'm having some trouble maintaining a constant volume when I move up the neck. It seems to me that the higher the notes I play, the more volume drop I am seeing, up to a point. It is never bad enough that I CAN'T hear myself, but it is definitely noticeable.

I do not currently use a preamp, although I'm planning on getting one in the near future (when I can afford it). Will this alleviate this problem? If not, then is a problem with my bass' electronics? (I play a crappy bass...there is a new bass in my future too, probably before the preamp.) Any ideas as to why this is going on would be a huge help. Also, any way I can clarify, just let me know. Thanks!

What kind of bass guitar is it? What kind of set up are you playing?

I also run through a Morley Dual Bass Wah, and a Boss Chrom. Tuner.

Things to try:

1) Adjust your pickup so the G-string side is closer to the strings
2) Refer to a frequency chart and determine WHERE this occurs. Get a stompbox graphic EQ to boost the "dropping out" frequencies.
3) If you use light gauge strings(40-60-80-100) consider swapping to "normal" gauge

Your B string starts at about 30 Hz.
g-string 12th fret is about 196 Hz
unless I'm in error due to 4 hours of sleep(gig last night, day job now)

Can't explain why it's happening, but I think that using a compressor would help to "even out" your volume.

Johnny Crab: Tomorrow afternoon I'll try matching the frequency chart to where it occurs. Sadly, I can't afford any EQ at the moment. I am using Medium DR Hi Beams though.

Vandelay: I have a Boss LMB-3, which I'm not currently running in my chain, will that serve the purpose, do you think? I wasn't really impressed with it, and was planning on selling it soon, but if it does the trick I might hang on to it.
