Lost the Pad on a Spider Capo--problem? Solution?

Hello! I have a Spider XL Capo that I've been using with my six-string bass for a few songs I play both with my band and on my own, and a while back the felt (?) pad on one side fell off. I stuck it back on several times, but didn't have any glue at the time so it never stayed. Now I have the glue, but the pad is lost, so I can't attach it! The whole thing still seems to work okay, but I'm leery of tightening it too much and damaging my bass's neck. Nothing seems to have happened yet.

Anybody know if this is actually a problem? Obviously the pads must be there for a reason.

Alternatively, does anybody know a good DIY alternative? Are the pads felt or leather? I thought felt but saw leather mentioned in the FAQ on their website. Nothing mentioned on the product page.

Thanks in advance!

Checked my parts bin and I have a whole roll of self-adhesive compressed felt padding: 2" wide x ~5/32" thickness...can't remember the purpose or intended application. I'd be glad to mail a healthy size hunk for trial.

I just cut a slice and stuck it to my work bench...it's not going anywhere. Easily cut-to-size with shears. This is why I don't throw anything away.
