I have an eDMX 1 on the way. About to take the Luminair plunge. The fixture profile prgramming thing seems to be the tough part. Love the idea on the iPad being the controller though.

You do have to run a utility program on a computer to set the IP of the interface once but after that no computer is necessary. This is about as small as a lighting rig can get and have any sort of power. Let alone the kind of power on tap here... About $350 after the iPad when all is said and done.
I hear there are folks running the presonus SL Remote App and Luminair on the same tablet. Will be using 2 as the idea just gives me the creeps and I have a spare gen 1 iPad for SL Remote.
So far I'll be powering up 4 Chauvet Slim Par 56 LEDs as front lights and 2 Chauvet 4 bar clones as back lights. I intend to add 4 more slim pars in front. Might end up with some economy wash fixtures to tide me over though.

personally i have never heard of it...and to be honest i couldn't find any documentation regarding voltage protection in the event of power spikes/surges..i have seen rigs completely destroyed because of this, and i have seen only the DMX/USB boxes destroyed because of the voltage protection...
personally i would recommend using Martin's DMX/USB box (around $450 2 x universes), or in the least an Enttec Open DMX USB (around $150ish 1 universe), then use Martin's MPC software and use Touch OSC to control it. the lighting software is free, and Touch OSC is free, or at least is when i last purchased it...

Ah. There is no computer and no USB. I'm using the DMXKing eDMX1 which hooks to the router directly. It is optically isolated as well. Once you embed the ip in the eDmX1, it is remembered. About $150 landed unless you want expedited delivery... DmxKing is New Zealand based. They seem to have a strong reputation with both the user and developer communities. Enttec does as well of course.
Touch OSC is interesting and I might go there at some point. It depends on how well we adjust to the ipad as lighting controller. We use them for lyrics and song lists plus studio live remote already. This is just one more on a stand... The DMXKing box is equivalent to the Enttec Open Ethernet box, a step up or sideways from the Open DMX USB.
What does the surge spike activity. Is it related to having high power lamps burn ? If so I've avoided that by staying LED. Seems like there should be some suppression device available for DMX if this is a common occurance...

i have had compressors from a fridge on the same circuit as the lighting, spike the voltage just enough to send it down the DMX line...frying lights and computers....so really what this shows is that it can be anything from bad power, to a fridge...
Interesting. And a little frightening. Sounds like a topic I should take more seriously. The good news is that in my rig there is relatively little draw so an appropriate level of protection should be closer to affordable. I'm hanging 16 led par 56 fixtures so not a huge draw. So far. I expect to add haze and moving heads next year. That will step up the draw no doubt.

As it turns out, the DmxKing eDmx1 interface is optically isolated. It is very similar to the Enttec Open DMX. Luminair won't do it's thing with the USB dongle style adaptors. The actual hookup is Router to eDmx1 via Ethernet cable and also U for power to the eDMX1. The DMX cable of course plugs into the eDMX1 interface. I connect to the router with the iPad, launch Luminair and we're up.
Beginning to think about a couple of moving heads. With no major events on the horizon until March, I have a little time to dial... And to begin evaluating some of the low end movers... There is an outfit in San Diego, unrec.com that has some 22 watt movers in the 275 range that seem pretty cool.
