Luther Vandross RIP

I just finished watching "Luthers" funeral on television and I must say he was extremely well loved. Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Cissy Houston (Whitney's mom), Patti Labelle and a host of others sang and spoke about this well loved brother. I myself had the pleasure of meeting Luther back in 1981 while he was coming to see Roberta Flack. I worked next door to the Dakota (where John Lennon was killed) parking cars, and that's were Roberta lived. I was eating my lunch when he walked in and we made eye contact. He had come to pick up his car and the attendents were taking care of him. I was stuck on stupid because I LOVED this mans music and now he stands before me in an office alone with me! I didn't want to approach him out of respect but to my shock he walked over to me, put out his hand and said "hi'. I shook his hand, wiped off my mouth and confessed to him that I was his number one fan! He laughed and we spoke till his car was ready. The next time I saw him I was going home and he had just gotten into his car, I pulled my car over and got out, walked over and he said "hey Tony how you doin" I told him I didn't want to hold him up that I just wanted an autograph for my girl. We didn't have anything on hand keepable to write on so I take out a $20 dollar bill, Luther tells me "Tony give me a single don't waste that $20" I told him "shut up and write! he laughed and wrote on every available part of the bill he could! The next time I saw him I was talking to my girlfriend on the phone, He pulled his car up and yelled out "what's happening" I reply's what's up Luther. My girlfriend hearing me say this ask who am I speaking to, I tell her Luther Vandross. She didn't believe me so I told Luther, well Luther walks over to me and takes the phone and motions to me "get lost". I was shocked and happy at the same time! See I had just had a nasty break up with my first wife and "a house is not a home" was my anthem to my girlfriend and the main reason her and I had gotten back together. He calls me back over after 5 or 10 minutes of taking to my girl on the phone and tells me "later" My girl was speachless, I felt like a million bucks!. I just had to share these moments with my fellow talkbassers because I just wanted everyone to know how humble, grounded and down to earth this man was. He made every one around him a better person and allowed his backround singer to alway's shine. He never did drugs, never was in trouble or had trouble anywhere around him. I thank God above for not only being able to enjoy his music but to be able to share minutes of my life alone with just him. I will never forget.

Thank you Luther :)
