Related question for the group: my understanding has been that composite necks without truss rods are stiffer than their counterparts with truss rods. That is, the composite necks with truss rods had to be made less stiff so that the rod could actually function. Is this true?

If true, I'm thinking that string changes will have little effect on a non-truss rod composite neck... but the only one I ever owned was a Music Man Cutlass over three decades ago, and I wasn't really paying attention back then.

I don't notice much if any change between DR round core sets with .030 .045 .065 .085 .105 .130 and the SIT Foundation .030 .040 .060 .080 .100 .120. However, the LaBella White Nylon 760T set seemed to need more height adjustment. The relief with any strings is very slight anyway.

I just know the Hellborg set is half the normal tension I usually run, and with no strings, the neck relief does move, so the neck not perfectly stiff.

I have had this bass for 18 years, and have used all multitude of strings, but never anything lighter than the SIT Foundation light set or LaBella 760T-CB

Legacy Insignia

Does anybody have any information on these?

From what I see, there were only 5-6 ever produced and they were one-of-a kind. Have only found a handful of photos online.

There is an incredible amboyna burl / maple that was at NAMM 2014 and on the banner.

Curious to see if anybody here on TB is in possession of one, or know the status of these.

Truly a showcase of Joe's workmanship, skills and attention to detail, he was also more adventurous in the body wood combinations.

Wow, that's nice. I remember around then when I ordered my Legacy Elite 519 Joe was talking about mixing up finishes on the bridges, in this case black saddles on a gold base. I still opted for all gold hardware but I thought it was a cool idea.

I've seen a few of those and they turned out great. There was also builds with the reverse; gold saddles on a black base.

I prefer black or gold hardware over chrome myself. It really depends on the top and overall look of the bass.

Does anybody know where I could get a new black Zon stamped bridge for a Sonus Special 4? I could always reach out to them directly, but I know how busy they are and don't want to be a burden.

I remember this one that came on the market about a year ago, yeah I should have jumped on it (it did not stay listed very long)

Pretty cool to have the Special and the Standard pick up placement no? Or too much?

I would have a really difficult time slapping on any bass with 24 frets and a pickup close to the fretboard. But I don't slap much at gigs (not at all with some bands) so I wouldn't rule out this config.

I am probably the worst slapper ever :)

I played back and forth my Custom Special and my regular Custom yesterday to try to understand how it would impair the playability…interesting enough, my right hand positions itself differently in regards to the space available.

But on the regular Custom that have the neck pickup, I can slap with not too much constraint between the pickup and the heel of the neck…so it should be good.

The Special with their rear pickups position are, of course, a bit more confortable, a bit like a Stingray
