Lyrical Interpretation - Sir Duke

Well i've been into Song in the Key of Life for a couple of months now and i'd really like to be enlightened about the meaning of the phrase:
"But just because a record has a groove
Don't make it in the groove"

anyone mind to spare 2 cents?

I always took it as meaning that "has a groove" referred to the physical groove in the record that the needle goes through, and "in the groove" meant that it was good music. I didn't read that anywhere or anything, that's just how I always took it.

i thought it meant a record could be playing a "groove" that isint any good..where as "in the groove" would be good, soulfull music. (this point is made in the next line "you can tell right away at letter A when the people start to move")

I think it's safe to assume that Stevie considers the artists he names in the song to be the grooviest of the groovy! Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, and most of all, Duke Ellington.
