M9/M13 Tricks

When I got my M9 I was actually looking for a DL-4 but then for a little more I could get *all* L6 effects plus a looper. I wasn't really looking for all those L6 effects because I have a Pod XT and some friends have an X3 (live and pro) - the effects never really talked to me.
When I got the M9 I immediately noticed a difference in the effects. The respond much better and sound more 'real'. Thinking this was only buyers expectation bias I let this idea go and enjoyed my M9 as much as possible (in addition to several other stomboxes). Fast forward to a few months ago when Line6 stated in the release of the HD series "now come with M-class effects" and this confirmed my guess... One friend bought the HD500 and has confirmed the quality jump as well.


(the bass octaver in the M-class pedals even outperforms the original EBS octaver, go figure :) )

so after my band opened up for THE Appleseed Cast :), i watched them perform an amazing set.
i mean, i've been a fan of theirs for over a decade and it blew me away!

AP (one of the guitarist) was using an M13 but mostly for delays. and i mean a lot of delay. at one point he had three delays stacked on top of each other and got this crazy pitch shift thing going on at the end of the chain.

it was truly exciting to be apart of the night and talking with the guys backstage was a hoot. they were completely down to earth, willing to "talk gear", and just all around friendly.

so yeah, i'm going to experiment with stacking delays now. (never had before)

Can you combine a few effects, save them and then recall them with just one click on the M13?

Most of the time I have more than one thing going on. For example:
- Comp + Distortion
- Comp + Overdrive + Chorus
- Octave + Filter
- Comp + Octave + Distortion

Is it possible to do it with the M13?

Reading through a few threads on the M13, I've notcied a few use a Boss LS-2 to blend in some clean signal, mainly when using overdrives.
Anyone has any clips of overdriven, distorted or fuzzed tones blended with clean signal, please? It's the only thing I'd love to hear before I pull the trigger and order one.

On the flip side, and I realize I'm probably in the minority, I've been able to get great distortion tones out my M13 without external blending. I've still got other outboards for some overdrives that I use all the time (and I've been on a mildly obsessive OD crusade lately), but overall I've been pretty surprised/impressed with the distortions it can do. Especially live, I think the M13 can really do it all. Note that I'm not a fan of fuzz pedals at all though, just distortion and overdrive.

The only thing I think the M13 sucks at is envelope filters, with is why I don't for see getting rid of my Source Audio pedal anytime soon :)

If you want, I can dig up a clip of a 100% M13 sound I use often.

I am getting a deeply satisfying synth sub response when I use the "Synth O Matic" - it really has balls until the signal starts to trail off and then it makes this warbly glide up to the next octave. Is there any way to pin this down to the low end? BTW, I tune down half a step.

I returned my M9 after having it for a week. The reasons...

-All the drive sounds did nothing for me, and seemed to lose a lot of low end.
-The filters left me less than satisfied, and I'm not interested in having to screw with my bass volume, especially live.
-The stomp switches were too close together and I kept hitting more than one at once.
-And finally, I found the whole unit to sound like a digital multi-effect to me. I don't know why but there is something about it that just didn't sound good. I felt like I was losing something with it.

I guess I just don't like multi-effects.

It's live (practice), but I think it sounds pretty good. Zoom H2 in 4-way mode (drums L+R, guitar L, bass R). 100% M13 through a GB SM 12.0 and a Schroeder cab, Warwick Thumb bass. The attack almost sounds like a pick, but it's not.

this might not be the right place. but i cannot for the life of me update my m13 to 2.1

someone give me a dumbed down guide to do it. ive read the line 6 instructions through and through. and i just cant get it

2.1? I thought the newest version was 2.04? What are you using to flash your M13?

I use MIDI-OX on Window 7 and its got some quirks but its fairly straight forward.

sooooo..... just got an M9 again. i had one for a few months a year or so ago. after all the glowing love towards the octaver i was hoping it'd replace the delay (Hardwire or Malekko 616), tuner and Aggy Octo i run on my board.

Delays - for sure. delays are about the only thing i prefer digital over analog on bass. you can get way lusher Feedback Into Madness with an analog delay, but i rarely do that. i like the crispness that digital brings to a delayed bass signal. this has more than i need, and i LOVE being able to have a universal tap tempo when i cycle through 'em.

Tuner - seems to track decently. it doesn't lock down as well as the Korg Pitchblack, but it works well enough. i only tune before a set and if i smacj my bass into something, and it seems like it'll cover that need.

Wacky/Other - there's some fun noises in here that i can see using for an intro or quick silliness. the Pattern Trem's kinda disappointing. if it had a depth knob it'd be way better. actually, all the trems are pretty meh. the Goatkeeper SLAYS there. but the Step Filter is really nice. it's really close to the Proteus. that was surprising.

Octaver/Pitch Shifter - hurm. i don't think i like the Bass Octave that much. it's really got that weird digital sound to it when it's doubling higher notes. lower range it's pretty good, but i WAY prefer how the Aggy sounds overall. and i like the Pitch Shifter setting.... sort of. it's fun to go baahWAHH up a couple octaves, but it sounds kinda.... **** when it's set to 0.0. it has an almost flanger movement. makes it hard to use for more than a second.

overall, really happy to have one again. was hoping it'd replace the Goatkeeper and Aggy Octo, and it reallllly doesn't. but it more than justifies the space of 2-3 pedals that it takes up on a board. hell, it's not really much more space than a tuner and a smaller delay that doesn't give you a dedicated tap temp button, save spots, and a decent looper. man i missed having a looper.

question time - sorry if this was covered earlier, but 17 pages of wading is a bit daunting. is there a way to have the knobs move more smoothly, in slower increments or jump to x.0 when you're adjusting them? it's pretty clunky having to go up and down past 12.0 to get to 11.7 then 12.3 then 11.5 then 12.6 then 11.9 then 12.0 OH CRAP I ACCIDENTALLY KNUDGED IT START OVER.

i.e. if you want to go to 12.0, move the knob and get as close as you can to 12.0.. let's say, 11,7...
Now, hold TAP TEMPO switch down, and while you do so, move the knob, and the increments will be slower (+/- 0,1)
